I’m LaKeisha — most people call me “L” — a multidisciplinary artist based in Atlanta, Georgia, creating under the name Joelle Monique.

My creative journey did not begin on canvas, but in design — shaping brands, building visual systems, and learning how imagery communicates meaning long before words are spoken. Over time, that discipline evolved into fashion illustration and painting, first as a personal therapeutic practice, and eventually as a calling. Painting became a way to slow down, to listen, and to help me process and honor what lived beneath the surface.

I work primarily with acrylic, gouache, and marker. My influences are layered — spirituality, culture, social awareness, and lived experience — and my work explores what it means to be seen — not only in how we present ourselves to the world, but as who we are becoming.

Over time, my focus has shifted from expression to responsibility. I create with an awareness of legacy and how visual language shapes the way we see ourselves and one another. At its core, my practice is about making space — for reflection, for becoming, and for remembering what already lives within us.

My work is a love letter — one that continues to unfold, shaped by who I am becoming.

why i do this

I believe creativity has the power to help us see ourselves more clearly. My work is rooted in faith and the belief that when women feel seen, affirmed, and connected, they begin to live differently. Through visual art and thoughtfully designed experience, I create spaces where Black women can reflect, breathe, and connect with who they’re becoming. My purpose is not just to create beautiful work, but to inspire hope, cultivate self-worth, and support women as they walk in alignment and purpose.

My work has been shared in exhibitions and community spaces that center storytelling, culture, and connection, with a focus on collective reflection and lived experience.
